Drive the truck for about 15 minutes to warm up the transmission fluid.
Park on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Jack up the truck and secure it with jack stands.
Place a large drain pan under the transmission pan. Loosen the bolts on one side of the pan, allowing the fluid to drain from the corner. Once the fluid has slowed to a drip, remove the remaining bolts and lower the pan.
The transmission filter is located inside the transmission. Pull down on the old filter to remove it. Install the new filter, making sure it is seated correctly.
Clean the transmission pan and the magnet inside. Install a new gasket on the pan. Reinstall the pan and tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.
Using a fluid pump, add about 4-5 quarts of new transmission fluid through the fill port on the side of the transmission.
With the engine running, cycle through the gears, pausing for a few seconds in each gear. With the transmission in park, remove the fill plug and check the fluid level. The fluid should be level with the bottom of the fill port. Add more fluid as needed.
